It was a dreary day in Manhattan the day before Thanksgiving. A constant rain filled the streets with that mucky water any urban veteran knows to avoid. Under hoods and black umbrellas, the group made their way through crowded sidewalks. Just west of 5th avenue on 28th street, they ducked out of the rain to head up a flight of poorly lit concrete stairs. They joked nervously with each other as the smell of sweat emerged from the room they approached. After training for months, they were about to enter the ring for the first time.
With wrapped hands, headgear donned, and mouth guards in place, the first two opponents entered the ring. The bell rang and they were off! Punching, ducking, and blocking, these two had the opportunity to do what most don’t get to– try to punch their colleague in the face! The others from the office cheered and took pictures and video as they leaned in over the ropes of the ring.
It was the culmination of a 3 month boxing fundamentals program that we led for this company. It took place 2 days a week in the mornings at their office, and included not only boxing technique, but strength and endurance training as well.
Over the course of this program, the participants learned a new skill and grew much closer as a group while they pushed through tough workouts together, working towards a common goal. And, of course, the group had a blast in the boxing ring.
Company field trips with a physical component are a fantastic tool to boost employee engagement. Admittedly, not every worker wants to enter a boxing ring, but there are lots of activities (see our blog entry on races here) that will help motivate employees and foster a culture of health in the office.
Healthy employees take fewer sick days and are more energetic and productive at work. It’s a win-win.
